Benefits of welding over riveting
Welding is a method which is widely used in fabrication industries to join similar or dissimilar materials. This sculptural process is generally done under a certain amount of temperature and pressure. During this process, high heat is generated to join the materials with each other.
Basically, welding is one of the popular fabrication processes which is mostly used for structural steel fabrications. The welding process is generally classified into different categories. The most common types are Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) etc.
Riveting is one kind of forging process that can be used for joining the parts. Basically, a rivet is a mechanical fastener and it consists of a cylindrical shaft. A rivet has a dome-shaped head and a cylinder-shaped tail. Generally, eight types of rivets are used in many engineering industries. They include blind rivets, flush rivet, drive rivets, self-piercing rivets, oscar rivets, friction-lock rivet, solid rivets, self-piercing rivets and structural steel rivets. Many welding engineering consultancy companies have sorted out some advantages of welding over riveting.

1. Weight: The riveted structures are generally heavy in weight as compared to welded structures. In the welding technique, gussets are not used due to this reason.
2. Efficiency: Welded joints always provide very high-efficiency, whereas the overall efficiency is comparatively lower in riveted joints.
3. Additions and alterations: The additions and alterations can be easily made in the welding structures in comparison to a riveted structure.
4. Smooth structures: You will get the smooth structures after welding. The smooth welding structures look very pleasing whereas rivet never gives the smooth structures.
5. Strength: The welded joint have a very good strength as compared to riveted joints.
6. Clearance: Welding engineers can easily join any part of metal with the help of welding applications whereas enough clearance is required in riveting.
7. Time: Another major advantage is that the welding takes very lesser time in comparison to the riveting process.
8. Cylindrical shapes: Cylindrical shapes can be welded very easily whereas riveting is not ideal for these shapes.
9. Durability: The welding joints are very strong and durable. They can not be easily bent. Modern rigid frames are generally manufactured by welding rather than riveting.
10. Tension members: In the welding process, the tension members can not be weakened as compared to of riveted joints
Basically, welding is not preferred in every place. It depends on many engineering aspects. Both the processes are very essential in many industries but in respect of the efficiency, durability and strength, welding is beneficial over riveting.
